Rounds Two And Three

Shhh.  I’m writing this while both boys are at large.  That’s to say, Bugs has retired to Fang’s bed, and Fang is somewhere not in Base Camp.

Round Two was me solo, sans Teresa, this afternoon.  This encounter was by and large soft, slow, almost dull.  Bugsy was sleepy.  He seemed bored.  Absolutely no Peacemaker required (but this was after I ordered another big bottle, just in case). Fang was very interested in everything, including Bugs.  But because Bugs was so not into it, really the two had very little to do with each other.  It was touching to see how respectful and mannerly Fangie was.  The boys touched noses numerous times, smelled each other’s hiney, and so forth, but really Fang had to content himself with investigating this room, while Bugs went to that room, and round and round we go.  At one point Bugs spent so long in Base Camp, I wondered whether I’d have to roust him in time to go to work.  Base Camp.  Doubtless reeking of Fangie.  Do any of you find that strange?  Why there?  In the end he left on his own accord.

Here’s Bugs at the closing bell, after I deposited Fang back in Base Camp.  In Fang’s bed, of all things.  Again, why?  (Or why ask why, I mean, we are talking about cats after all but I can’t help myself.)  Trying to own it for himself?  Was he despondent?  I thought maybe.  He’s eaten just one scant mouthful of real food all day today.

But I decided maybe he was just really tired from the stress.  This is him just before I left for work.  More relaxed.

I came back from work intending to do trade-the-treat through the cracked Base Camp door again – but Bugs, reaching through with a gentle paw, seemed interested this time.  So I opened the door, and there we were in Round Three.  There were a couple of baps and whaps from the Bugster, but no hissing, no ears back, no blood, nothing serious.  I do believe that part of the time, the two were playing a chase game.  I also played our customary games, with one boy and then the other.  They weren’t into playing with each other, or I should say Bugs wasn’t into playing with Fangie, but they played separately with me, in the same room as each other, and I count that as progress.

It’s three hours into Round Two as I write.  The state of play now is that Bugs is crashed out in Fang’s bed, and Fang is still investigating knocking things over.  Or, as of now, he’s sprawled out chewing on the raffia mat right next to me, as I type this.  Or, here he is on the cube.  Owning it.

This boy is at home.  I trust Bugs will come around.

  1. Hmmm. Very interesting, Bean… I’m going to say that Bugs’ interest in Base Camp is his way of taking baby steps towards this new guy. He’s getting used to being surrounded by Eau de Fang without having to worry about Fang being there. And he’s probably making a bit of a statement about territory and re-marking the room as his. I think it all sounds a bit dull, but good. Keep up the good work!

When Calla was merging in a few years back, it went from my room your room, to my floor your floor for a day or so, and then the ‘turf’ was just a little bubble around each cat.

So for instance if the other cats were sitting on the bottom of the step, Calla would jump from the bannister to the shelf to the brown chair to get into the living room. It seems like you are almost in that stage now – its not that they have a room of their own, they may be careful of the space around them.

  3. Cat's Cats says:

Every time I have brought a new cat out of his quarantine room (and it’s happened five times) whoever the resident(s) was/were at the time couldn’t wait to get in there and put their smell on everything, not to mention poop in the litter box! It is just a cat thing and part of the acclimation process 🙂 Sounds like things are going really well…you might be able to exhale soon!

  4. We were wondering how things were going.

They are going good. Really good. Bugs is coming around, and Fangie is not being intimidated. You might want to separate the boys while your gone, but otherwise, our suggestion is open the door, and toss a couple toys in the middle of the floor. Then relax.

  5. Wow, things are going so well! A few whaps? Totally understandable and, in terms of cat behavior, totally acceptable. Bugsy will let Fang know that he’s top cat, and he’s allowed. Sleeping in Fangie’s bed is also perfectly natural, for exchanging scents and for claiming top cat privileges.
I’m so happy for you! This introduction period is going so extremely well! I wish mine went as well, MOL!
As long as you’re home, you could leave that door open I bet. Maybe not at night for a few more days, but wow, they’re doing so good I’d just leave Fangie out all the time while I was there.
I’m so proud of you and happy for you! You’re really doing great! I do hope you are relaxing and seeing how good it is going!

I’ve been trying to catch up with all the excitement. You might remember, I introduced two young kittens to our household of three mature cats in May last year. It is a tad stressful. Bugs is the AlphaCat, and he will sleep where ever he likes to prove it. Esp in Fang’s bed. In my experience, across all my cats) tolerance is an achievement of monumental proportions, and something I would like to see a little more of from the lovely Mr Stripey Pants.
I also think Lee County Clowder’s advice is sound, and pretty much how we did it here. You have to watch them a bit, but you’ll hear about it if you need to intervene!

I was thinking about you yesterday, how Fangie and Bugsy were doing. 😮
Good to know there was no blood, no hissing and growling. 🙂
    And Fangie looks absolutely adorable!

Hang in there. Looks like you are winning!!

Fang looks right at home, sprawled on that lovely kitty bed.

  10. That is great…..the fact that Bugs is that relaxed is awesome. I agree – he is in base camp getting his scent back on the stuff – and soaking in Fangie’s scent as well. I would consider this a HUGE success….
