What A Difference . . .

. . . A Day Makes.

(Ed. Note:  Before you go any further in this post, make a note to check out the video in Ivy’s comment below.  Do yourself a favor.  Would it make your day?  Would that song stay stuck in your head for the next several weeks at least?  Just wondering.)

Here’s what happened later yesterday – but only after things had escalated to the point where Bugsy actually bodyslammed me.  With claws.  He basically never does this, except when he does.  It was like he was saying, “Lookit ma, if you don’t let me rumble him it’s gonna be you.  Outta my way you Bean you.”

But, later, after Bugs spent some time by himself in Base Camp —

And later still —

Dear readers commented that it was probably me who was most bothered.  You recognized evidence I could not:

Item:  Scripted scenario, one lying down, other nipping in with quick licks and out again.
Item:  Ears mostly forward.
Item:  The casual “look-away,” to give the other a pounce opening.
Item:  Nobody particularly terrified or harmed (except me).
Conclusion:  This was a show gladiator lecture-demonstration.

Item:  No up-front trash-talk, no major hollering-growling-yowling.

Conclusion:  They’re testing each other, straightening out the pecking-order necessary to share the territory.  Bugs carefully explains.  Barnes, being the cool cat that he is, is basically OK with it.

“A little more to the right.”

“Ma.  Lighten up.”

About nadbugs

Anita loves cats. This must be because she, too, has had nine lives. She’s been dancing since she could walk, she was a commercial artist and advertising producer, she earned a third-degree black belt in Aikido, she is a drummer with the Afrique Aya Dance Company, she is an attorney, and she’s a meditator and a devoted student of Nonviolent Communication. She also spent one lifetime sidelined with a devastating back injury in 1992. Since then – FELDENKRAIS METHOD® to the rescue. The FELDENKRAIS METHOD is all about dreaming concretely – thinking intelligently and independently by way of a gracious and kind physicality. The work affords all who study it a process by which to reach, with movement, into the mind and the heart, to make nine lives into one whole being.

Wow, how wonderful… And while I know it probably seemed like ages on your end, that was FAST!

    • nadbugs says:

Yes, FeyGirl, pretty amazing — although they are back to rumbling, behind my back, as I write this. But I’m letting it go. It’s a funny thing about time. It has seemed like ages. It’s been one week and couple of days. Both true! Weird.

  2. That’s so good that time brings us new perspectives, huh? The title of your post inspired me, have you ever heard Dinah Washington singing ‘What a difference a day makes”?

I’m listening right now… Happy for a new day. Happy for you and the boys. And remember to always assure Bugsy that he was there first (it was key the first time around, right?)
    Have a wonderful Sunday!

YOWZERS!! This is just FABULOUS!!! Totally made my day. Must put a reference up in the post. I don’t want anybody to miss this.

And again I’d forgotten to praise Bugs. So I was in the middle of doing so, and Barnes came hurtling by, jumped from the table, did a back flip, started mincing sideways at Bugsy — and they’re off again. Treats waiting for Bugs, as soon as the interval —

Ah. Bugsy has called the interval, jumped up on the table next to me, and is hoovering the treats.

      Never a dull moment.

THANK YOU dear friend Ivy. As I said — you have made my day. Doubt I’ll be able to stop singing.

Barnes is looking a little sodden there! hahahahahaha!

That first photo–my, that’s a LARGE floofy cat and another one quite relaxed, lolling about. Is that Fangie’s Shiva mouse there by the dinosaur?! (Can you tell that if I were to come to your house, as soon as you were off making tea and I had observed the most basic of pleasantries, I’d be snoopin’ in your bookshelves?! I like all the critters lined up there!)

And in Bean’s defense: if they wouldn’t be so thundery and fast-moving at one another, the Bean wouldn’t have to wonder! So there!

Oh! And you’re lying on the floor again for your cats! Awwww!

  4. nadbugs says:

Lahgitana! You’re right, about Fangie’s shiva mousie! You have super-vision! (I love looking at peoples’ bookshelves too. And refrigerators. If a person doesn’t have interesting stuff stuck on the fridge, well — what can I say. You should see mine. Which you wouldn’t be able to, because there isn’t a square nano-inch of surface left unplastered.)

Yup. On the floor. It was fun. I didn’t get wet. But Barnes did. As you note. 🙂

  5. Herman says:

  9. Charles Huss says:

Cats are better at forgiving and forgetting than humans are.

  10. CATachresis says:

I just knew they would work it out!! They are just joshing you! I am sure they will fight again and scrap, but looks like they are on a good path 🙂

Love that song!!!!! Brings back some memories 🙂

  11. Marilia says:

    Time is everything!!!
    Have a great week!

  12. starlight says:

wow, those eyes.. they look sweet together..

  13. Dianda says:

I don’t remember where I read it before, but if a cat licks another cat’s head, it means he’s trying to let him know that he’s the boss. Not sure if it’s true! Haven’t bothered to look it up yet. But I think it was in one of the local newspapers around here with a cat-article. 🙂

    • nadbugs says:

I do think there are dominance issues being discussed here, dear Dianda. But I’m not sure it’s a hard-and-fast rule about the head-grooming being done by the boss. Barney’s doing it to Bugs, too, though I don’t have a picture of that yet. I don’t *think* Barnes wants to be the boss; I *think* he seems more-or-less content for Bugs to take that role — but it’s not quite clear. Perhaps your newspaper account is right. Bet you we’d know a lot more after you turned your formidable research skills on the question, hint, hint . . .

  14. Love that last photo. Reminds us of when Billy White Shoes & Grace O’Malley were first getting together. We’d hear Billy yelling and struggling. Dad would go check, and he’d be greeting with two oh so innocent kitties: “Well, what?”

  15. looloo says:

    Hello, Anita,

Is everything OK? I am looking forward to hear more stories and see more pictures about your boys! And I think I am not the only one! 🙂

    Take care!
